As well as checking out how well everyone says a retailer does by looking at a range of online review sites, we like to test out how well they do by ordering ourselves.
For GetGeared, it was just a Pinlock antifog insert we ordered.
Get Geared’s website isn’t the easiest to navigate and sometimes the product data does leave a bit to be desired. I chose a clear Pinlock for my Caberg Duke which came over their £25 price for free delivery. Online, the page gave me two prices, one a pound cheaper than the other, which was a bit weird!
I added the Pinlock to my basket and sure enough, it showed the price as £33.99 (the higher price) and gave me the option of paying by credit card or Paypal. I chose credit card – it then took me to a screen where I could register with the site or continue with my order as a guest without registering – I chose to register.
It was a pretty straight forward process. I then was given the option of free delivery with Royal Mail Tracked Economy or loads of other quicker delivery options at a cost. Obv, I chose the free delivery.
If you order gear under £25 and choose to order by PayPal, it’ll get you to login to PayPal before asking you to select delivery method (and then add the cost to the total) which is a bit annoying because I thought it was giving me free delivery – it isn’t!
For my helmet order, I then paid by credit card and order was placed Friday 22nd July at 11.40am.
Once the order was placed, I could then click ‘my account’ on the website to track my order which was good.
I got order confirmation emails through – then a weird one saying part of my order was out of stock, even though I only ordered one item! Having said that, there was an option to part send the order so I clicked that and they confirmed they’d send what they had in stock. Weird. Again.
Friday 4pm. I got a second of two ‘how was your shopping experience’ email through – and a second one saying my order had been despatched and should arrive in 48 hours. I guess that’ll be Monday given it’s now a Friday.
I did then try and see ‘my account’ again on their website, but clicking it didn’t do anything. Even clicking ‘login’ then my account didn’t do anything. Thankfully there’s a ‘tracking’ link on the despatch email they sent – but unfortunately, the Royal Mail site said they didn’t recognise the tracking reference! Tracking fail!!
When I did actually manage to login to GetGeared’s accounts page (gawd knows how!) it did say it’d been despatched though.
Checked again on the Sunday at 10am and the tracking link in GetGeared’s accounts page did work and the Royal Mail tracker said it was at the Leeds mail centre – so it’s heading in the right direction!
Monday 25th July at 11.20 am and the Pinlock was delivered by the postie – correct Pinlock and all was well.
Overall, the ordering and delivery was spot on and it came nice and quickly. Just that all the other stuff – the tracking, the account login, the online pricing – wasn’t. Given that, we’ll continue to recommend them – but feedback how they need to improve. Word is that their site’s due an upgrade soon anyhow so hopefully they’ll sort out their technical problems then.
